Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) or exercise-induced asthma (EIA) occurs when the lungs’ airways narrow as a result of physical exertion. Chronic asthma sufferers are at an increased risk for EIA, however otherwise healthy individuals may also have the condition. Most experience EIA flare-ups when exercising.
Symptoms usually occur 5 to 20 minutes after exercise. While some health issues may be avoiding by simply eliminating exposure to triggers, exercise is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. An immunologist can assist you relief of EIA symptoms so that you can continue to be active.
While exercise is, as the name implies, the main trigger of EIA, other conditions which may worsen symptoms include dry air and low temperatures. Breathing through the mouth may also worsen the condition. One simple measure of relief is to breathe through the nose as much as possible during physical activity. The nose naturally warms the air, preventing cold, dry air from entering the lower airways.
Pollution in the air, respiratory infections, and high pollen levels also worsen symptoms of EIA. Poor physical health and nasal allergies may put people at an increased risk of developing EIA or contribute to EIA symptoms.
