What is Symbicort?
Symbicort is a controller medication that contains:
- Budesonide – an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation.
- Formoterol – a long-acting bronchodilator that helps keep airways open.
It helps prevent asthma symptoms and reduce flare-ups. It is not a substitute for your rescue inhaler unless your physician has specifically instructed you to use it as part of a SMART (Single Maintenance and Reliever Therapy) plan.
Before You Use It
✔ Remove the cap.
✔ Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds.
✔ Prime the inhaler if it is new or has not been used for an extended period, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Stand or sit upright.
- Breathe out fully.
- Seal your lips around the mouthpiece.
- Begin a slow, deep inhalation.
- Press the canister once while continuing to inhale slowly and deeply.
- Hold your breath for about 10 seconds.
- Breathe out slowly.
- If a second inhalation is prescribed, wait 30–60 seconds, shake the inhaler again, and repeat.
After Every Dose
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out.
This helps reduce the risk of oral thrush (yeast infection) and hoarseness.
Take It Every Day
Symbicort works best when used consistently, even if you feel well.
Do not stop taking it without discussing it with your healthcare provider.
Possible Side Effects
- Hoarseness
- Sore throat
- Oral thrush
- Mild tremor
- Fast heartbeat (less common)
- Headache
Call Our Office If
- Symptoms are becoming more frequent.
- You need your rescue inhaler more often.
- Nighttime symptoms increase.
- You are experiencing medication side effects.
Seek Emergency Care Immediately If
- Severe shortness of breath
- Rescue medication does not relieve symptoms
- Difficulty speaking due to breathing problems
- Blue lips or fingernails
- Severe chest tightness
Helpful Tips
• Use the inhaler exactly as prescribed.
• Do not skip doses.
• Keep track of the remaining doses.
• Store at room temperature.
• Bring your inhaler to every office visit so we can review your technique.
